Jammu & Kaschmir ist ein Zentrum des Gartenbaus und trägt durch seine vielfältige Obstproduktion, insbesondere Äpfel, Walnüsse, Kirschen und Safran, erheblich zur indischen Wirtschaft bei. Die einzigartigen agroklimatischen Bedingungen der Region ermöglichen den Anbau von qualitativ hochwertigen, gemäßigten Früchten und machen die Region zu einem wichtigen Akteur auf den Binnen- und Exportmärkten. Der Gartenbau bietet über 33 Lakh Menschen eine Lebensgrundlage und umfasst rund 3,30 Lakh Hektar. Trotz Herausforderungen wie unzureichender Infrastruktur, unorganisierter Vermarktung und begrenzter Kühllagerung haben Regierungsinitiativen wie die Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) und Subventionen Produktivität und Qualität verbessert. Mit angemessener politischer Unterstützung, modernen Praktiken und Exporterleichterungen birgt der Gartenbausektor von J&K ein immenses Potenzial für nachhaltiges Wirtschaftswachstum und globale Reichweite.
