However, an invention has value only when it can be appropriately protected, developed and translated into practical or commercial use.Patenting provides an important mechanism for protecting technological innovation. A patent gives its owner a legally enforceable right, subject to the applicable law and jurisdiction, to prevent others from exploiting the patented invention without authorization for a specified period. In exchange, the inventor is required to disclose the invention sufficiently so that the technical knowledge becomes part of the public body of knowledge.
