Na Tunísia, a água geotérmica é uma importante fonte de energia para as estufas, em primeiro lugar para o aquecimento e, em segundo lugar, para a irrigação das culturas. No entanto, podem ser causados danos ao sistema radicular quando a temperatura ultrapassa os 38°C ao nível do solo, dando origem à questão do stress térmico radicular. O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar a tolerância da variedade de tomate 'Roma' a este stress com base em parâmetros fisiológicos e bioquímicos. No final do estádio da sexta folha, as plantas de tomate cultivadas em hidroponia foram submetidas a diferentes choques térmicos ao nível do substrato de 35°C, 39°C e 45°C na presença de um lote de controlo colocado a 25°C. A colheita foi efectuada 1, 3 e 6 dias após o tratamento térmico. Os resultados mostram que o crescimento é estimulado a uma temperatura radicular de 35°C. No entanto, foi registado um efeito depressivo no crescimento a temperaturas radiculares de 39°C e 45°C. O aumento da temperatura do substrato de 25°C para 35°C é, portanto, ótimo para o tomateiro, enquanto que 39°C e 45°C não são tolerados.
