L’apprendimento basato sui compiti (TBL) e il costruttivismo non sono idee nuove, ma sono forse l’argomento più recente. Una reazione alle politiche educative, basate sulla metodologia grammaticale-traduttiva, che si è dimostrata inefficace nell’ESL, è anche una reazione all’incapacità degli studenti di esibirsi in situazioni di vita reale dopo aver ottenuto punteggi ragionevolmente alti nei test TOEIC. Le teorie avanzate da Atherton, Atkinson, Burner, Piaget, Chomsky e altri hanno contribuito a modificare le teorie, ma è stato Vygotsky, uno psicologo, a proporre il concetto di Zona di Sviluppo Prossimale (ZPD). In qualità di psicologo sociale, Vygotsky ha fornito la teoria, mentre Bruner, Atherton e altri hanno sviluppato la pedagogia.
