A aprendizagem baseada em tarefas (TBL) e o construtivismo não são ideias novas, mas talvez sejam o foco mais recente. Teorias apresentadas por Atherton, Atkinson, Burner, Piaget, Chomsky e outros trabalharam na modificação das teorias, mas foi Vygotsky, um psicólogo, que apresentou a noção da Zona de Desenvolvimento Proximal (ZPD). Como psicólogo social, Vygotsky forneceu a teoria, enquanto Bruner, Atherton e outros desenvolveram a pedagogia.
