O desinteresse pela aprendizagem na escolaridade obrigatória em Inglaterra tem sido associado ao desinteresse e ao insucesso escolar e constitui atualmente uma grande preocupação para os decisores políticos e os profissionais que trabalham no domínio da educação. Além disso, nos últimos anos, tem-se verificado um aumento do número de raparigas que se envolvem em comportamentos anti-escolares, o que leva a que, por defeito, sejam rotuladas como não conformes. Embora tenham sido utilizadas muitas estratégias para reduzir a desvinculação e para incentivar os jovens, estas são frequentemente implementadas com sucesso variável. Assim, este livro explora os percursos de dez raparigas de 14-16 anos, identificadas pelas suas escolas como descontentes e em risco de exclusão, a fim de elucidar as suas preocupações. Uma análise das suas experiências num ambiente de aprendizagem alternativo é utilizada para ilustrar a complexidade do descontentamento no ensino obrigatório e para realçar a necessidade de compreender uma miríade de factores que podem afetar a aprendizagem. O ambiente alternativo é justaposto ao ambiente escolar para identificar práticas bem sucedidas de reinserção e para ilustrar a forma como as raparigas conceptualizam a aprendizagem em cada um deles, à medida que passam do desinteresse para a reinserção.
