Rośliny strączkowe uprawiane są w Indiach od niepamiętnych czasów. Spośród różnych roślin strączkowych ciecierzyca jest jedną z najważniejszych roślin strączkowych uprawianych w sezonie rabi. Powszechnie znana jest pod nazwą „bengal gram' lub „gram'. Jest to roślina samozapylająca, należąca do podrodziny Papilionaceae z rodziny Leguminaceae (Bentham i Hooker 1970). Ciecierzyca (Cicer arietinum) jest ważną rośliną strączkową spożywczą uprawianą w sezonie chłodnym, o szerokim zasięgu geograficznym. Cieszy się dużą popularnością i ma szerokie zastosowanie; oprócz tego, że jest bogata w białko, jej zdolność do wykorzystania azotu atmosferycznego poprzez biologiczne wiązanie azotu jest bardziej opłacalna ekonomicznie i przyjazna dla środowiska. Ciecierzyca jest stosowana jako „dal' w postaci łuskanej, spożywa się również całe nasiona smażone lub gotowane. Łupiny i resztki „dal' są wykorzystywane jako pożywna pasza dla zwierząt. Niedojrzała, zielona ciecierzyca jest spożywana jako warzywo, a mąka z niej jest głównym składnikiem przekąsek i słodyczy w Indiach i Pakistanie. Uważa się, że ciecierzyca ma właściwości lecznicze i jest stosowana do oczyszczania krwi. Ciecierzyca zawiera 21,1% białka, 61,5% węglowodanów i 4,5% tłuszczu.
