Odpadem jest każda substancja wyrzucona po pierwotnym użyciu lub bezwartościowa, wadliwa i bezużyteczna. Z kolei produkt uboczny to wspólny produkt o stosunkowo niewielkiej wartości ekonomicznej. Odpady żywnościowe często odnoszą się do żywności, która nie jest ostatecznie spożywana przez ludzi, a która jest wyrzucana lub poddawana recyklingowi, np. odpady talerzowe (tj. żywność, która została podana, ale nie została zjedzona), zepsuta żywność lub skórki uznane za niejadalne. Kompostowanie, recykling i właściwa utylizacja to skuteczne metody zarządzania odpadami kuchennymi. Praktykując te metody, możemy pomóc zmniejszyć ilość odpadów na wysypiskach i chronić środowisko. Ponadto możemy również zaoszczędzić pieniądze i poprawić jakość gleby poprzez kompostowanie odpadów spożywczych. Istnieje wiele alternatywnych nazw zarządzania odpadami, w tym usuwanie odpadów, usuwanie śmieci i recykling. Definicja gospodarki odpadami obejmuje działania obejmujące zbieranie, niszczenie i usuwanie odpadów. Odpady mogą składać się z papieru, plastiku, szkła, metalu lub materii organicznej.
