Abfall ist jede Substanz, die nach der primären Verwendung entsorgt wird oder wertlos, fehlerhaft und nutzlos ist. Ein Nebenprodukt hingegen ist ein Gemeinschaftsprodukt von relativ geringem wirtschaftlichen Wert. Unter Lebensmittelverschwendung versteht man oft Lebensmittel, die letztendlich nicht von Menschen verzehrt werden und dann weggeworfen oder recycelt werden, wie z. B. Tellerabfälle (d. h. Essen, das serviert, aber nicht gegessen wurde), verdorbenes Essen oder Schalen und Schwarten, die als ungenießbar gelten. Kompostierung, Recycling und ordnungsgemäße Entsorgung sind wirksame Methoden zur Entsorgung von Küchenabfällen. Durch die Anwendung dieser Methoden können wir dazu beitragen, den Müll auf Mülldeponien zu reduzieren und die Umwelt zu schützen. Darüber hinaus können wir durch die Kompostierung von Lebensmittelabfällen Geld sparen und die Qualität des Bodens verbessern. Es gibt viele alternative Namen für die Abfallwirtschaft, darunter Abfallentsorgung, Müllentsorgung und Recycling. Eine Abfallwirtschaftsdefinition umfasst Aktivitäten, die das Sammeln, Vernichten und Entsorgen von Abfällen umfassen. Abfallstoffe können aus Papier, Kunststoff, Glas, Metall oder organischem Material bestehen. Die FAO definiert Lebensmittelverschwendung als. „Lebensmittel, die für den menschlichen Verzehr geeignet sind, werden weggeworfen, unabhängig davon, ob sie über ihr Verfallsdatum hinaus aufbewahrt werden oder dem Verderben überlassen werden.'
