Dyrektorzy szkół stoją przed wielkim wyzwaniem, jakim jest z jednej strony wdrażanie wytycznych dotyczących polityki edukacyjnej, takich jak np. zarządzanie jakością (SQA), koncepcja nowej szkoły średniej itp., a z drugiej strony ciągły rozwój szkoły. Liczne badania dotyczące efektywności i rozwoju szkół potwierdzają pozytywny wpływ profesjonalnych społeczności uczących się na rozwój nauczania i kadry w szkołach. Są one zatem uważane za motor rozwoju szkół i jakości, dlatego też ich wprowadzenie w szkołach uznaje się za sensowne. W niniejszej pracy badawczej zamierzamy określić warunki sprzyjające i hamujące wdrażanie i rozwój profesjonalnych społeczności uczących się z punktu widzenia dyrektorów szkół i nauczycieli. Główny nacisk kładziemy na znaczenie dyrekcji szkoły w tym procesie. W ramach badania jakościowego przeprowadzono wywiady z dyrektorami szkół i nauczycielami. Uzyskane wyniki zostały połączone z wiedzą teoretyczną, a na ich podstawie opracowano środki i zalecenia dla dyrektorów szkół dotyczące wdrażania i rozwoju profesjonalnych społeczności uczących się.
