In the early summer of 1940, the French Third Republic vanished not merely through the sheer momentum of an invading army, but through a profound, self-inflicted institutional collapse. Within six weeks, the nation possessing what was widely regarded as the most formidable land army in Western Europe suffered a military, political, and psychological catastrophe without precedent in modern history. As millions of terrified civilians choked the country’s roadways in a desperate flight southward, the parliamentary republic, which had endured for seven decades and survived the grueling trial of the First World War, folded upon itself. In its place emerged the French State (L’État Français), anchored in the quiet spa town of Vichy and headed by Marshal Philippe Pétain, the venerated hero of Verdun. This transition was not an inescapable outcome dictated solely by foreign occupation, but an intentional, internal counter-revolution. The fall of France exposed deep structural fractures within the nation’s social and political fabric, enabling an authoritarian right-wing elite to dismantle democratic institutions and institute a radical ideological project under the shadow of German hegemony.

The present age is not merely an epoch of discovery; it is also a period of revision of the various elements of knowledge. To-day she sees her ancient principles vanishing one by one. ...

  • Romanticism and the Rediscovery of Religion
    Gabriel W. Campbell
The history of modernity is often told as a story of separation. According to one influential narrative, the advance of science, the triumph of rational inquiry, and the emergence of secular political institutions gradually displaced the authority of religion from the center of Western life. The Enlightenment, in this account, inaugurated a new age in which reason replaced reve...

To the uninitiated observer of modern literary history, the fairy tale-or Märchen, as it was definitively conceptualized within the German cultural sphere-occupies a modest and strictly sequestered domain. It is routinely categorized as a charming relic of agrarian folklore, a pedagogical instrument for the moral instruction of children, or a harmless mechanism of escapist ente...
