Le présent travail montre pour la première fois au niveau cellulaire la contribution d’une seule protéine de surface à l’invasion du complément et à l’immunité de Candida albicans. Tef1 (Translation Elongation Factor 1) est une protéine de moonlighting de C. albicans. Elle est exprimée et sécrétée à la surface des cellules et est également localisée dans le cytoplasme en tant que facteur de traduction. Tef1 agit aussi bien - en tant que CRASP (complement regulator acquiring surface protein) - directement sur le lieu d’expression que - en tant que protéine sécrétée - à distance de la surface cellulaire fongique. Tef1 se lie aux cellules et aux composants du système immunitaire inné et influence également le système immunitaire adaptatif, en particulier les cellules B. Globalement, Tef1 est une protéine d’invasion immunitaire multifactorielle de C. albicans. Sa caractéristique de moonlighting en tant que protéine de surface et sécrétée permet à Tef1 de moduler à la fois la réponse immunitaire innée (cascade du complément) et la réponse immunitaire adaptative (cellules B). Ainsi, Tef1 permet de diverses manières la persistance de C. albicans dans l’organisme humain.
