No presente trabalho, é demonstrada pela primeira vez, ao nível celular, a contribuição de uma única proteína de superfície para a evasão imunológica e do complemento da Candida albicans. A Tef1 (Translation Elongation Factor 1) é uma proteína moonlighting da C. albicans. É expressa na superfície celular, secretada e também localizada no citoplasma como fator de tradução. A Tef1 atua tanto como CRASP (proteína reguladora do complemento que adquire a superfície) diretamente no local da expressão, quanto como proteína secretada, longe da superfície celular do fungo. A Tef1 liga-se a células e componentes do sistema imunológico inato e continua a influenciar o sistema imunológico adaptativo, especialmente as células B. No geral, a Tef1 é uma proteína multifatorial de evasão imunológica da C. albicans. A sua característica de moonlighting como proteína de superfície e secretada permite que a Tef1 module tanto a resposta imunológica inata (cascata do complemento) quanto a adaptativa (células B). Assim, a Tef1 permite de várias maneiras a persistência da C. albicans no organismo humano.
