Dieses Buch befasst sich mit der Herstellung eines Nutrazeutikums, der konjugierten Linolsäure, die krebshemmende und gegen Fettleibigkeit wirkende Eigenschaften aufweist und aus dem Öl der Wüstenpflanze Balanites aegyptiaca gewonnen wird. Konjugierte Linolsäure ist insofern einzigartig, als ihre krebshemmende und gegen Fettleibigkeit wirkende Wirkung bereits bei Konzentrationen zum Tragen kommt, die nahe an den menschlichen Verzehrsmengen liegen; daher gilt sie als potenzieller Wirkstoff für Arzneimittel und Nahrungsergänzungsmittel. Experimentell wurde das Öl der Balanites aegyptiaca mittels Soxhlet-Extraktion aus dem Fruchtfleisch gewonnen. Drei Fettsäuren im extrahierten Öl wurden abgetrennt und identifiziert. Die Fettsäureanalyse erfolgte mittels Gaschromatographie (GC). Zur Gewinnung von Linolsäure, die für die Synthese von konjugierter Linolsäure (CLA) verwendet wurde, wurde eine kristallisationsgestützte Trennung durchgeführt. Zur qualitativen Bestimmung des Linolsäuremethylesters wurde die Gaschromatographie eingesetzt. Die Biokonversion von Linolsäure zu konjugierter Linolsäure erfolgte unter Zuhilfenahme von Lactobacillus sp.
