La séquestration du carbone se produit à la fois naturellement et à la suite d’activités anthropiques; elle désigne généralement le stockage du carbone susceptible de se transformer immédiatement en dioxyde de carbone gazeux. Face aux préoccupations croissantes liées au changement climatique résultant de l’augmentation des concentrations de dioxyde de carbone dans l’atmosphère, la possibilité d’accroître le taux de séquestration du carbone par des changements dans l’utilisation des sols et la sylviculture, ainsi que par des techniques de géo-ingénierie telles que le captage et le stockage du carbone, suscite un intérêt considérable. La capacité des écosystèmes terrestres à stocker le carbone est limitée et le potentiel actuel de séquestration reflète principalement l’appauvrissement dû à l’utilisation passée des terres. Éviter les émissions provenant des stocks de carbone terrestres et reconstituer les stocks appauvris permet de réduire la concentration de CO₂ dans l’atmosphère, mais l’ampleur maximale de cette réduction ne représente qu’une petite fraction des émissions potentielles issues des combustibles fossiles. L’une des principales opportunités offertes par l’agriculture pour contribuer à atténuer les effets des gaz à effet de serre réside dans la gestion des sols visant à augmenter leur teneur en matière organique, ce qui permet de retirer du carbone de l’atmosphère.
