Lata 1914-1950 zbiegają się w czasie z rozkwitem nacjonalizmu i stanowią pomost między literaturą kolonialną a postkolonialną. Wielu poetów zaangażowanych w walkę o dekolonizację stało się głosem swoich narodów. Zarówno na poziomie politycznym, jak i językowym, ich poezja ukazuje walkę o niepodległość i samookreślenie. Forma modernistyczna odgrywa w tej walce decydującą rolę. Nie można czytać tych poetów w oderwaniu od ich zaangażowania w indywidualne walki ich krajów o wolność polityczną i kulturową. Yeats i Tagore na nowo zdefiniowali odpowiednio poezję irlandzką i bengalską na początku XX wieku w opozycji do brytyjskiej obecności kolonialnej; poezja Senghora i Césaire’a tworzy koncepcję negritude jako reakcję na francuską politykę asymilacji kolonii; a Neruda w swojej poezji, długo po uzyskaniu niepodległości od Hiszpanii, wytycza tożsamość Chile i Ameryki Łacińskiej, która stanowi wyzwanie dla tradycji europejskich i północnoamerykańskich.
