O professor Mehta analisa a interação entre poesia e política nas colónias e ex-colónias da Inglaterra, França e Espanha durante a era da descolonização. O período entre 1914 e 1950 coincide com o crescimento do nacionalismo e constitui uma ponte entre as literaturas colonial e pós-colonial. Muitos dos poetas envolvidos na luta pela descolonização tornaram-se a voz das suas respetivas nações. Tanto a nível político como linguístico, a sua poesia revela uma luta pela independência e pela autodefinição. A forma modernista desempenha um papel decisivo nesta luta. Estes poetas não podem ser lidos independentemente do seu envolvimento nas lutas individuais dos seus países pela liberdade política e cultural. Yeats e Tagore redefiniram a poesia irlandesa e bengali, respetivamente, no início do século XX, em oposição à presença colonial britânica; a poesia de Senghor e Césaire cria o conceito de negritude como reação à política francesa de assimilação dos seus colonos; e Neruda, na sua poesia, muito tempo depois da independência da Espanha, define uma identidade para o Chile e a América Latina que desafia as tradições europeias e norte-americanas.
