Le professeur Mehta examine l’interaction entre la poésie et la politique dans les colonies et anciennes colonies de l’Angleterre, de la France et de l’Espagne à l’époque de la décolonisation. Les années comprises entre 1914 et 1950 coïncident avec la montée du nationalisme et constituent un pont entre les littératures coloniales et postcoloniales. Bon nombre des poètes engagés dans la lutte pour la décolonisation sont devenus la voix de leurs nations respectives. Tant sur le plan politique que linguistique, leur poésie révèle une lutte pour l’indépendance et l’autodéfinition. La forme moderniste joue un rôle décisif dans cette lutte. On ne peut lire ces poètes indépendamment de leur implication dans les luttes individuelles de leurs pays pour la liberté politique et culturelle. Yeats et Tagore ont redéfini respectivement la poésie irlandaise et bengalie au début du XXe siècle en opposition à la présence coloniale britannique ; la poésie de Senghor et de Césaire a donné naissance au concept de négritude en réaction à la politique d’assimilation des colonies menée par la France ; et Neruda, dans sa poésie, bien après l’indépendance vis-à-vis de l’Espagne, a défini une identité pour le Chili et l’Amérique latine qui remet en question les traditions européennes et nord-américaines.
