Der Begriff 'Ökologie' wurde erstmals von dem Biologen E. Haeckel im Jahr 1866 geprägt. Ihm zufolge ist die Ökologie die Wissenschaft von den Beziehungen zwischen der lebenden Materie und der sie umgebenden Umwelt (von den griechischen Wörtern ekos / oikos - Heimat und logos - Wissenschaft). Die Ökologie ist eine komplexe Wissenschaft, die sich der Methoden und Konzepte von Biologie, Geologie, Chemie, Physik, Mathematik, Geografie, Ingenieurwissenschaften, Wirtschaft, Recht usw. bedient.Bei der Umweltüberwachung geht es um die Überwachung und Kontrolle des Zustands der Umwelt in allen ihren Bestandteilen (Luft, Wasser, Boden, Gestein, Ökosysteme, Arten) und um die Warnung vor entstandenen kritischen Situationen, die für die Umwelt und den Menschen schädlich oder gefährlich sind. Es wird ein Netz von Punkten eingerichtet, um landesweit Daten über den Zustand der Umwelt zu sammeln. Der Standort der Punkte wird auf wissenschaftlicher Grundlage festgelegt. Beim Aufbau des Netzes zur Überwachung der Luft werden zum Beispiel klimatische und meteorologische Faktoren berücksichtigt. In der Regel werden die Punkte in der Nähe von Schadstoffen eingerichtet. Probenahmen werden für alle Umweltbestandteile - Luft, Oberflächen- und Grundwasser, Böden und Gestein - durchgeführt, die Verbringung von Abfällen wird überwacht.
