Leczenie melatoniną i/lub DHEA wykazało działanie terapeutyczne, charakteryzujące się zmiennymi wartościami procentowymi poprawy we wszystkich badanych parametrach biochemicznych, poprzez wyraźnie przyspieszoną regenerację wątroby po częściowej hepatektomii, łagodzenie uszkodzeń wątroby wywołanych przez DMN dzięki ich działaniu zmiatającemu wolne rodniki, modulowanie uszkodzeń wątroby i zwłóknienia wątroby poprzez hamowanie cytokin zapalnych i stresu oksydacyjnego, a także stymulowanie mitozy hepatocytów, co w konsekwencji prowadzi do przeżycia szczurów z wysokim ryzykiem pooperacyjnej niewydolności wątroby po hepatektomii. Wyniki te potwierdziły zdolność obu leków do wychwytywania wolnych rodników oraz ich działanie przeciwutleniające w zakresie wspomagania regeneracji wątroby po częściowej hepatektomii, w przypadku marskości wywołanej DMN oraz w przypadku wątroby z marskością po częściowej hepatektomii.
