Its tobacco harvest time on the small farm in Trimble County, Kentucky, in the 1950s. In the distant tobacco patch, Daddy, along with uncles and cousins, is cutting stalks and loading wagons that will carry the tobacco to be housed in the tobacco barn that stands with the other farm buildings of the nineteenth-century homestead. Occasionally, despite the distance, laughter drifts across the fields to the ears of the young girls who are doing chores at the house and milk barn. Then, suddenly, there is a disturbance in the peace and quiet that spurs the sisters to seek safety with their family on the far end of the farm.
