This story has value for preserving the cultural heritage of rural farm life in 1950s America. It is a wonderful read-aloud since the vocabulary is challenging and yet appropriate for preschool and early elementary children. The rhyme and rhythm are very appealing. Children will enjoy the brilliant watercolor illustrations created by Annette Lewis. They can also seek and find the secret critter that appears in each illustration. It is great for one-on-one reading by a parent or grandparent to a little one as the book offers opportunities for the older generation to share their own experiences with the younger one.
