Abbiamo stimato il meccanismo di volo dell’oca canadese utilizzando un modello di braccio a due articolazioni con prestazioni aerodinamiche instabili per esaminare quanta energia può essere risparmiata durante la migrazione. Dalle distribuzioni di velocità e pressione sull’ala, abbiamo determinato che un’oca può risparmiare circa il 15% dell’energia riducendo la resistenza aerodinamica modificando la morfologia dell’ala. Dal campo del flusso d’aria nella scia, abbiamo determinato che un’oca dietro può risparmiare circa il 16% della sua energia sfruttando la potenza indotta da una coppia di vortici di vantaggio a spirale tridimensionale (FAV) in formazione a V. Abbiamo dedotto quantitativamente che la profondità ottimale era di circa 4 m dalla punta dell’ala dell’oca che precede e che la WTS ottimale era compresa tra 0 e -0,40 m nella sezione spanwise. La differenza di fase del flappeggio tra l’oca che precede e quella che segue è stata stimata in circa 90,7° per sfruttare efficacemente il beneficio aerodinamico causato dalla FAV. I nostri risultati dimostrano che l’uso del meccanismo aerodinamico instabile nel volo migratorio con flapping non è limitato a uccelli grandi e pesanti con flapping ad alta velocità, ma può essere applicato anche a mini o micro veicoli aerei (MAV) come i veicoli spia con flapping.
