I grilli preferiscono nascondersi in luoghi bui e sono sensibili alla luce; gli agricoltori usano vassoi per le uova, foglie di banana essiccate e cartoncini di rotoli di carta velina per fornire loro comfort. Sono attivi di notte per foraggiare, accoppiarsi, cantare e deporre le uova. Un maschio può accoppiarsi con 1-5 femmine e le femmine depongono le uova entro 7-10 giorni dall’accoppiamento. La produzione media di uova è compresa tra 3.154 e 4.128 uova per ciclo. I grilli selvatici si accoppiano a metà della stagione delle piogge, quando i maschi producono suoni unici per attirare le femmine. I grilli si nutrono di foglie, verdure e frutta. Un mangime contenente il 20%-22% di proteine potrebbe ridurre il cannibalismo e accelerare la crescita. I mangimi ad alto contenuto proteico (60%-70%) sono un’alternativa ai mangimi convenzionali per ruminanti. L’uso di grilli vecchi e improduttivi per sostituire le farine di soia nelle razioni di agnello ha rivelato che l’utilizzo delle farine di grillo ha raggiunto il 100%. Le piccole e medie imprese di allevamento di grilli forniscono un reddito e un beneficio significativi agli agricoltori.
