Wir haben den Verbrauch von Holzenergie, insbesondere von Holzkohle, in den Haushalten untersucht und dessen Auswirkungen auf das Haushaltsbudget der Haushalte in der Gemeinde Kisenso, einer Vorortgemeinde der Stadtprovinz Kinshasa, ermittelt. Aus den erzielten Ergebnissen geht hervor, dass der finanzielle Anteil des Holzkohleverbrauchs am Haushaltsbudget hoch ist. Eine Person gibt täglich 105 kongolesische Franken aus; für einen 6-köpfigen Haushalt entspricht dies 630 kongolesischen Franken pro Tag (900 Fc entsprechen 1 US-Dollar). Angesichts der geringen Kaufkraft der Einwohner von Kinshasa, ja sogar der Kongolesen insgesamt, sind dies ruinöse Ausgaben. Die ökologischen Auswirkungen sind erheblich, da eine Person täglich 269 Gramm Holzkohle verbraucht. Der geschätzte Bedarf der Gemeinde Kisenso im Jahr 2009 lag bei fast 57,99 Tonnen pro Tag. Die Ergebnisse zeigten zudem, dass 94 % der Haushalte Holzkohle zum Kochen verwenden, vor allem wegen ihres hohen Heizwerts (7.000 kcal pro kg).
