La ricorrente insicurezza alimentare, dovuta al susseguirsi ravvicinato di crisi, costituisce una sfida di fondamentale importanza per i paesi del Sahel e dell’Africa occidentale. I governi hanno messo in atto politiche e strategie volte a ridurre la vulnerabilità delle popolazioni all’insicurezza alimentare, con il sostegno dei partner, per contrastare gli effetti di tale fenomeno. Tuttavia, è innegabile che la situazione rimanga tuttora preoccupante. Questo studio, condotto nel dipartimento di Kaédi, situato nel sud della Mauritania, ha permesso di evidenziare che i principali fattori di rischio sono l’aumento dei prezzi dei prodotti alimentari e l’insufficienza delle piogge. Le principali strategie di adattamento consistono nel ricorso agli aiuti umanitari, nella diversificazione delle fonti di reddito e nell’intensificazione del lavoro giornaliero. L’ampliamento delle reti di sicurezza sociale, la promozione di tecniche agricole adatte ai cambiamenti climatici, la diversificazione delle fonti di reddito e il sostegno all’allevamento sono, tra le altre, le azioni da prendere in considerazione per aumentare la resilienza delle famiglie rurali di fronte agli shock.
