After a brief overview of questions related to the fundamentals of osteopathy, the author examines the scientific nature of these fundamentals. The various models that have emerged in the sciences throughout history show us that they depend on their authors, are refutable, and that an exact phenomenological approach to reality is impossible-even utopian-as recently revealed by the cross-disciplinary, multidisciplinary modeling approach to complex systems. Dogmatic, authoritarian teaching of 'sacred' knowledge is no longer possible in osteopathic education. To move beyond the empirical model, research in osteopathy is necessary; it ensures the discipline’s survival, legitimacy, and credibility in the face of the mandatory imperative of patient safety. Research begins as early as the training phase of future practitioners, as the author demonstrates through his experience teaching the pedagogy of inquiry to senior-year students.
