Schwermetalle aus verschiedenen natürlichen und anthropogenen Quellen sind die gefährlichsten und giftigsten Substanzen, die das gesamte Feuchtgebietsökosystem stören und gleichzeitig die menschliche Gesundheit beeinträchtigen können. Mehrere Einschränkungen chemischer Technologien ebneten den Weg für die Nutzung von Feuchtgebietspflanzen als biologische Ressource durch Phytosanierungsmechanismen als kostengünstige, umweltfreundliche und nachhaltige Technologie zur Entfernung von Schwermetallen. Das vorliegende Buch befasst sich mit den vielfältigen Mechanismen, dem Nutzen und den Problemen im Zusammenhang mit der Nutzung von Feuchtgebietspflanzen und ihrer Anwendung in der Phytoremediation zur Entfernung von Schwermetallen aus natürlichen und künstlich angelegten Feuchtgebieten. Die Anwendung der Phytoremediationstechnologie in künstlich angelegten Feuchtgebieten wird erfolgreich zur Reinigung von kontaminiertem Wasser durch den Einsatz geeigneter Feuchtgebietspflanzen eingesetzt. Feuchtgebietspflanzen können zusammen mit den mit ihnen verbundenen Mikroben zur ordnungsgemäßen Behandlung von Schadstoffen, insbesondere Schwermetallen, genutzt werden.
