L’extraction de sable dans de nombreuses zones de Rundu constitue un problème environnemental préoccupant en raison de la demande croissante dans le secteur du bâtiment et de la construction. Le problème est exacerbé par le fait qu’il s’agit d’une activité socio-économique importante pour la communauté locale. La dégradation environnementale déjà observée comprend la perte de végétation, la perte de la couche arable, l’érosion des sols accélérée par les véhicules transportant du sable sur des chemins non définis, une altération du paysage (ravines à ciel ouvert) et la perte de terres qui auraient autrement été utilisées pour l’agriculture. L’objectif principal de cette étude était de déterminer les impacts socio-économiques de l’extraction de sable et ses effets sur l’environnement, en particulier sur le couvert végétal (arbres ligneux). L’étude a eu recours à des observations sur le terrain et à des méthodes de collecte de données telles que des entretiens et des questionnaires pour déterminer ces impacts. L’étude a révélé que la majorité des propriétaires fonciers ont transformé leurs terres en sites d’extraction de sable pour subvenir à leurs besoins.
