A extração de areia em muitas zonas de Rundu constitui uma preocupação ambiental devido ao aumento crescente da procura por parte do setor da construção civil. O problema tem sido agravado pelo facto de se tratar de uma atividade socioeconómica importante para a comunidade local. A degradação ambiental já observada inclui a perda de vegetação, a perda da camada superficial do solo, a erosão do solo - acelerada por veículos que transportam areia em caminhos não definidos -, a desfiguração estética (ravinas abertas) e a perda de terras que, de outra forma, teriam sido utilizadas para a agricultura. O principal objetivo deste estudo foi determinar os impactos socioeconómicos da extração de areia e os seus efeitos no ambiente, nomeadamente na cobertura vegetal (árvores lenhosas). O estudo recorreu a observações de trabalho de campo e a métodos de recolha de dados, tais como entrevistas e questionários, para determinar esses impactos. O estudo constatou que a maioria dos proprietários de terras converteu as suas terras em locais de extração de areia para garantir o seu sustento.
