Sesamum indicum L. (Sin. Sesamum orientale L.), conhecido por vários nomes, como sesamum, til, gingelly, simsim, gergelim, etc. O gergelim é uma das culturas oleaginosas mais antigas do mundo. As planícies do norte da Índia, Birmânia e Abissínia, incluindo a Somália e a Eritreia, são os principais centros de origem, com a Ásia Central como outro centro de origem do sésamo. O sésamo é a cultura oleaginosa mais importante cultivada na Índia, a seguir ao amendoim, à colza e à mostarda. É cultivado em três estações, a saber, kharif, semi-rabi e verão. O gergelim é mais conhecido como a rainha das oleaginosas devido à qualidade do seu óleo comestível e ao seu teor de proteínas. Contém 44-63% de óleo e 18-20% de proteínas. A presente investigação foi, portanto, planeada para avaliar diferentes linhas de germoplasma do gergelim com os seguintes objetivos: 1. Avaliar a extensão da variabilidade genética para características quantitativas importantes. Avaliar a natureza da associação entre o rendimento e os atributos de rendimento. Identificar os potenciais stocks genéticos para futuros programas de melhoramento genético.
