Circa il 10% di tutte le piante vascolari del mondo ha abitudini epifite. Questo libro caratterizza la floristica, la struttura e la distribuzione spaziale della comunità vascolare epifita in frammenti forestali protetti e non protetti nel bacino idrografico di Sorocaba/Médio Tietê, che presenta tre tipi di vegetazione: cerrado (CER); foresta stagionale semidecidua (FES); foresta ombrofila densa (FOD). Per ogni tipo di vegetazione sono stati studiati sette frammenti forestali. Sono state valutate 1080 forofite, suddivise in sei strati verticali. Sono state registrate 176 specie epifite appartenenti a 66 generi e 14 famiglie; H’=3,695; J=0,713; DMg=18,39. Il 56% delle specie era anemocorico e il 44% zoochorico. La maggiore somiglianza floristica è stata osservata tra CER e FES; FOD ha avuto il maggior numero di specie esclusive (94 spp.). La distribuzione verticale era diversa tra CER e FOD e tra FES e FOD, ma simile tra FES e CER. I risultati indicano la dipendenza della comunità epifita dall’umidità atmosferica. La presenza di 50 specie minacciate costituisce un forte argomento per la conservazione dei frammenti forestali del bacino.
