La ricerca ha dimostrato che gli insegnanti basano le loro aspettative sulle caratteristiche degli studenti, quali genere, status socioeconomico ed etnia. Queste aspettative possono avere un effetto sugli studenti perché possono influenzare il comportamento degli insegnanti. Questo studio ha cercato di indagare il ruolo della familiarità sulle aspettative degli insegnanti nei confronti degli studenti di un gruppo etnico che non è stato studiato fino ad oggi, ovvero gli Hmong. Sono stati completati dei sondaggi da 55 membri del personale docente delle scuole elementari pubbliche con le percentuali più alte e più basse di studenti Hmong in un distretto scolastico dell’Upper Midwest. Sono state confrontate le valutazioni degli studenti Hmong e non Hmong in merito al comportamento in classe e al rendimento scolastico. I risultati hanno mostrato che il personale docente tendeva a valutare gli studenti Hmong più positivamente rispetto agli studenti non Hmong in termini di comportamento positivo in classe e in alcune aree scolastiche, mentre gli studenti non Hmong tendevano ad essere valutati più positivamente in termini di comportamenti negativi in classe. Il personale docente delle scuole con la percentuale più alta di studenti Hmong tendeva a valutare gli studenti Hmong più positivamente rispetto al personale delle scuole con la percentuale più bassa di studenti Hmong.
