Cette étude de deux cas visait à démontrer comment l’éducation des adultes a favorisé le processus de changement économique et social ainsi que le développement national en Jamaïque, à travers un examen critique de deux exemples d’offres en matière d’éducation des adultes - l’Université de technologie de la Jamaïque (UTech) et la Fondation jamaïcaine pour l’apprentissage tout au long de la vie (JFLL) - en Jamaïque depuis l’indépendance du pays en 1962. Cette étude de cas n’avait pas pour objectif de tester une théorie particulière ni d’en développer une nouvelle. Elle constituait plutôt une tentative d’aborder l’analyse de l’éducation des adultes à l’aide de concepts comparatifs très élaborés (Stone, 2013). Elle a donc adopté une approche interdisciplinaire s’appuyant sur plusieurs concepts de développement et perspectives éducatives afin 1) de décrire le contexte dans lequel l’éducation des adultes s’est déroulée à différentes périodes de l’histoire de la Jamaïque et 2) d’analyser le type de dispositifs d’éducation des adultes qui ont permis aux individus et à la société de s’adapter aux changements sociaux survenus.
