Le xerofite e le alofite che crescono naturalmente nei deserti egiziani possono svolgere un ruolo importante per il benessere degli egiziani. Oltre a essere piante tolleranti alla siccità e/o alla salinità, tutte hanno un certo potenziale agroindustriale. Queste piante sono infatti promettenti risorse naturali rinnovabili che potrebbero fornire al Paese materie prime per diverse industrie. La conservazione e l’utilizzo sostenibile di queste piante dovrebbero avere una base scientifica. Inoltre, la produzione di alofite come colture foraggere non convenzionali nelle terre salmastre dei deserti egiziani potrebbe svolgere un ruolo importante nella carenza di mangimi per animali e nella produzione di carne in Egitto. Purtroppo, poco si sapeva sull’autecologia della maggior parte di queste preziose xerofite e alofite. Il presente libro fa luce sui diversi aspetti ecologici e sul potenziale economico di alcune specie nella penisola del Sinai, in Egitto.
