Tropische Wälder sind bekannt für ihre reiche Biodiversität, ihren Beitrag zum globalen Kohlenstoffspeicher und ihre vielfältigen Ökosystemleistungen für Mensch und Tierwelt. In Indien gibt es 16 große Waldtypen, die von trockenen tropischen Buschwäldern bis zu feuchten Bergwäldern reichen. Unter ihnen ist der tropische immergrüne Trockenwald (TDEF) an der Coromandel-Küste Indiens einer der am wenigsten erforschten Waldtypen. Dennoch waren verschiedene Standorte des TDEF unterschiedlichen anthropogenen Störungen ausgesetzt, die von unberührt und relativ ungestört bis stark gestört reichten. Dieses Buch ist ein Versuch, die wissenschaftliche Lücke in unserem Wissen über die Biodiversität und Ökologie dieses einzigartigen Waldtyps zu schließen, indem es unsere über 25 Jahre gesammelten Forschungsdaten zur Biodiversität und funktionellen Ökologie zusammenfasst, die auf den Schutz der Wälder und der wertvollen biologischen Ressourcen abzielen, die sie bieten. In zwanzig Kapiteln behandelt dieses Buch ein breites Spektrum an Themen, darunter die Vielfalt der Pflanzen und Tiere und ihre komplexen Wechselwirkungen, die angebotenen Ökosystemleistungen, einschließlich wirtschaftlicher Leistungen für das Wohlergehen der Menschen. Es schließt mit einer Schlussfolgerung zur Notwendigkeit des Schutzes und zur Zukunft dieses Waldtyps unter den sich verändernden Umweltbedingungen.
