As florestas tropicais são bem conhecidas pela sua rica biodiversidade, contribuição para o stock global de carbono e vários serviços ecossistémicos que prestam à humanidade e à vida selvagem. Existem 16 tipos principais de florestas na Índia, que variam de matagais tropicais secos a florestas temperadas úmidas montanhosas. Entre elas, a floresta tropical seca perene (TDEF) na costa de Coromandel, na Índia, constitui um dos tipos de floresta menos estudados. No entanto, vários locais da TDEF foram submetidos a diferentes níveis de perturbações antropogénicas, variando de intocados, relativamente intactos a altamente perturbados. Este livro é uma tentativa de preencher a lacuna científica no nosso conhecimento sobre a biodiversidade e a ecologia deste tipo de floresta único, reunindo os nossos dados de investigação rigorosos gerados ao longo de 25 anos sobre biodiversidade e ecologia funcional, com o objetivo de conservar as florestas e os valiosos recursos biológicos que elas oferecem. Em vinte capítulos, este livro abrange uma ampla gama de tópicos que incluem a diversidade de plantas e animais e suas interações complexas, os serviços ecossistémicos oferecidos, incluindo serviços econômicos para o bem-estar humano. Conclui sobre a necessidade de conservação e o futuro deste tipo de floresta num cenário ambiental em mudança.
