Bei einer vierzehntägigen Erhebung auf Obstmärkten in Bengaluru, Tumkuru, Shimoga und Chitradurga von November-Dezember 2015 bis März-April 2016 wurde während des gesamten Erhebungszeitraums Schwarzschimmelfäule an Granatäpfeln festgestellt. Das Auftreten der Krankheit war im April am höchsten (12,48 %) und im Januar am niedrigsten (4,44 %). Epidemiologische Untersuchungen zeigten, dass eine Verletzung der Früchte für die Infektion wesentlich war, da Früchte, die ohne Verletzung inokuliert wurden, keine Symptome entwickelten. Alle verletzten Früchte entwickelten Fäulnis, wobei das Anbohren mit Korken die wirksamste Inokulationsmethode war. Die Infektion trat im unreifen, halbreifen und reifen Stadium auf, wobei der Befall im reifen Stadium am schwersten war. Temperatur und relative Luftfeuchtigkeit beeinflussten die Krankheitsentwicklung, wobei die Inzidenz bei 0°C am geringsten und bei 30°C am höchsten war. Die Krankheitsschwere war bei 50 % relativer Luftfeuchtigkeit am geringsten und nahm bis zu 100 % zu. Nacherntebehandlungen wie das Eintauchen in heißes Wasser (40±1°C bis 50±1°C für 10 Minuten), Fungizide, Öle und Lebensmittelkonservierungsmittel verringerten die Fäulnisschwere wirksam. Bavistin (0,1 %), Indofil M-45 (0,2 %), Captan (0,2 %), Rizinusöl (0,4 %), Neemöl (4,0 %), Kaliummetabisulfit (0,5 %) und Natriumbenzoat (0,5 %) waren bei der Reduzierung der Infektion und der Erhaltung der Fruchtqualität wirksam.
