Die Häufigkeit von Eisenmangelanämie bei jugendlichen Mädchen nimmt zu. Trotz verschiedener Präventionsmaßnahmen zur Bekämpfung dieses Problems hat sich die Krankheit weiter ausgebreitet und ist weltweit auf der Gesundheitskarte zu finden, wobei Indien besonders stark betroffen ist. Neben anderen Mikronährstoffmängeln können auch chronische Entzündungen und vererbte Störungen der Hämoglobin-Struktur zu Anämie führen. Die Bedeutung von ernährungsbasierten Ansätzen zur Prävention und Bekämpfung von Mikronährstoffmangel sowie zur Verbesserung der Ernährung ist ein zunehmend wichtiges Anliegen der FAO. In Indien haben einige unkonventionelle und traditionelle Zutaten wie Niger-Samen einen hohen Eisengehalt, sind jedoch weniger bekannt. Die Ergänzung mit eisenreichen Niger-Samenprodukten hat das Potenzial, den Hb-Spiegel der Probanden allmählich zu erhöhen, und kann zur Prävention und Behandlung von Anämie in Verbindung mit einer Ernährungsberatung für betroffene gefährdete Gruppen der Bevölkerung eingesetzt werden.
