Este livro procura avaliar a qualidade da água do rio Shatt Al-Arab com base em alguns parâmetros químicos e físicos, e investigar o impacto da descarga do rio e da elevação da água na condutividade elétrica (CE) e em alguns outros parâmetros. Também procura identificar a extensão do impacto da cunha salina do Golfo Árabe no rio Shatt Al-Arab. Foram recolhidas amostras de água em seis estações ao longo dos últimos 127 km do rio até à sua foz no Golfo. Os parâmetros investigados foram: EC, salinidade (SAL), acidez (pH), oxigénio dissolvido (OD) e temperatura da água (Tº). As medições laboratoriais foram realizadas para investigar os níveis de cloreto (Cl), potássio (K), sulfato (SO4), sódio (Na), cálcio (Ca), magnésio (Mg) e bicarbonato (HCO3). A qualidade da água do rio Shatt Al-Arab pode ser avaliada de acordo com o padrão de irrigação (US-Salinity Lab) como C4S1, que era salina a extremamente salina com baixo risco de sodicidade. De acordo com o padrão da Organização Mundial da Saúde para água potável (OMS, 2003), a água é imprópria para consumo.
