L’éducation est un outil permettant de lutter contre la pauvreté et de promouvoir la paix, la justice sociale, les droits humains, la démocratie, la diversité culturelle et la sensibilisation à l’environnement. Cependant, l’éducation des filles se caractérise par un faible taux de scolarisation et un taux d’abandon élevé. Entre 2011 et 2013, 11 % des filles ont abandonné leurs études secondaires dans le monde, 58 % en Afrique et 37,9 % au Somaliland. Cette étude a examiné les facteurs influençant l’intention d’abandonner l’école chez les filles des écoles secondaires publiques du district de Borama, au Somaliland, à l’aide d’une enquête transversale menée en novembre 2014 auprès d’un échantillon aléatoire stratifié de 322 filles. Elle a établi que le statut socio-économique (F [1, 322] = 3,871, p = 0,003, R = -0,631, R2 adj = 0,393), les facteurs socioculturels (F [1, 322] = 3,871, p = 0,000, R = -213, R2 adj = 0,042) et les facteurs communautaires (F [1, 322] = 3,871, R = -329, p = 0,000, R2 adj = 0,105) influencent de manière significative l’intention d’abandonner l’école chez les filles. L’étude a conclu que le statut socio-économique est le principal facteur influençant l’intention d’abandonner l’école chez les filles des établissements secondaires publics. Le ministère de l’Éducation, de la Jeunesse et des Sports devrait offrir des bourses ou un enseignement secondaire universel aux filles.
