I pomodori sono una fonte importante di antiossidanti quali carotenoidi, tra cui licopene e beta-carotene, vitamina C, vitamina E e polifenoli quali kaempferolo e quercetina, con una notevole capacità di eliminare le specie di ossigeno attivo (AOS). La caratterizzazione e la quantificazione della diversità genetica sono da tempo uno degli obiettivi principali della biologia evolutiva. L’analisi della variazione genetica sia all’interno che tra i materiali di selezione d’élite è di fondamentale interesse per i coltivatori. I marcatori molecolari si sono dimostrati strumenti potenti nella valutazione della variazione genetica e nella delucidazione delle relazioni genetiche all’interno e tra le specie. In questa tesi abbiamo valutato i principali fitochimici presenti nel pomodoro, con particolare attenzione ai composti che svolgono un ruolo significativo nel determinare l’attività antiossidante e il valore nutrizionale del pomodoro. Abbiamo inoltre scoperto le relazioni filogenetiche delle linee di pomodoro utilizzando SDS-PAGE e marcatori RAPD.
