La stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni), una pianta perenne originaria della catena montuosa dell’Amambaí, una regione situata tra Brasile e Paraguay, appartiene alla famiglia delle Asteraceae e produce due metaboliti secondari di interesse economico, lo stevioside (Est) e il rebaudioside A (Reb A). Questi metaboliti sono, rispettivamente, 300 e 450 volte più dolci del saccarosio e hanno proprietà antiacide, cardiotoniche, anticarie, antirotavirus, attività antimicrobica, antiossidante, antiiperglicemica e insulinotropica che aiutano nel trattamento del diabete di tipo 2 e stimolano la secrezione di insulina agendo sulle cellule β del pancreas. Nella regione dell’Alto Vale do Itajaí, la coltivazione della stevia potrebbe diventare una valida alternativa alla coltivazione del tabacco, ma per questo sono necessari genotipi adattati e produttivi per la regione. Lo scopo di questo studio è stato quello di valutare la produzione di biomassa e l’accumulo di stevioside e rebaudioside A nella regione dell’Alto Vale do Itajaí - Santa Catarina - Brasile.
