Die Pro-Kopf-Verfügbarkeit von Milch erreichte im Jahr 2012-13 einen Wert von 296,5 Gramm pro Tag und liegt damit über dem weltweiten Durchschnitt von 294 Gramm pro Tag. Der größte Teil der Milch im Land wird von kleinen Kleinbauern und landlosen Arbeitern produziert. Bis März 2013 wurden etwa 15,1 Millionen Bauern in 1.55.634 milchwirtschaftliche Genossenschaften auf Dorfebene eingebunden. Die genossenschaftlichen Milchverbände haben im Jahr 2012-13 durchschnittlich 32,8 Millionen Kilogramm Milch pro Tag beschafft, gegenüber 28,7 Millionen Kilogramm im Vorjahr, was einem Wachstum von 14,3 Prozent entspricht.
