Das Umweltmanagementsystem (UMS) dient der Bewertung und dem Management von Umweltrisiken und schädlichen Auswirkungen in Unternehmen und Organisationen. Das Umweltmanagementsystem ist ein Instrument zur Verwaltung der Auswirkungen der Tätigkeiten von Organisationen auf die Umwelt. Dieses System bietet einen strukturierten Ansatz für die Planung und Umsetzung von Umweltschutzmaßnahmen. Das Umweltmanagementsystem überwacht die Umweltleistung von Unternehmen und Organisationen; ähnlich wie das Finanzmanagementsystem eines Unternehmens, das die Einnahmen und Ausgaben überwacht und eine regelmäßige Überprüfung der finanziellen Leistung des Unternehmens ermöglicht, integriert dieses System das Umweltmanagement in die täglichen Aktivitäten und Abläufe des Unternehmens, seine langfristigen Pläne und andere Aspekte des Qualitätsmanagements. Es ist möglich, das Umweltmanagementsystem in das Endziel der Organisation zu integrieren, um es zu erreichen und gleichzeitig die optimale Leistung der Organisation zu erhalten. Dies geschieht in der Regel durch das Management der laufenden Verfahren der Organisation. Verschiedene Arten von Umweltmanagementsystemen informieren die Leiter der Organisation oder Projektmanager.
