Nach den demokratischen Wahlen von 1994 leitete die südafrikanische Regierung radikale Reformen des Apartheid-Bildungssystems ein, zu denen auch die Entwicklung einer Politik gehörte, die sich für Menschenrechte und soziale Gerechtigkeit einsetzt. Die integrative Bildungspolitik mit dem Titel „Education White Paper 6: Special Needs Education: Building an Inclusive Education and Training System' (Bildungsministerium, 2001) wurde im Juli 2001 veröffentlicht. Diese integrative Bildungspolitik brachte die Aussicht mit sich, die Strukturen zu ändern, die ausgrenzende und diskriminierende Praktiken im Bildungssystem förderten. Während der integrative Bildungsrahmen durch explizite politische Richtlinien, klar definierte Ergebnisse und ein festes Bekenntnis zu Menschenrechten und sozialer Gerechtigkeit gekennzeichnet ist, wird zunehmend erkannt, dass eine erhebliche Lücke zwischen diesem Rahmen und seiner effektiven Umsetzung besteht. Dieses Buch beleuchtet die Engpässe und Triebkräfte der integrativen Bildung. Es gibt Empfehlungen zu evidenzbasierten Strategien, die die Inklusion erleichtern.
