Nas últimas duas décadas, as vastas áreas de pastagem da Mongólia foram rapidamente degradadas e desertificadas. Embora se acredite que a principal causa desta crise nacional sejam as alterações climáticas, o sobrepastoreio e a sobrepopulação de gado são também factores importantes. Agora, um novo estudo avaliou a degradação e o valor económico do gado (sobretudo caprino) que está a causar grande parte dos danos. Para encontrar uma solução para a crise, o estudo também avaliou uma série de opções políticas fundamentais. O estudo é obra de Erdenesaikhan Naidansuren e Onon Bayasgalan do Centro de Ambiente e Segurança da Mongólia. Os investigadores demonstram que as cabras não valem o elevado valor que os pastores lhes atribuem. Os investigadores recomendam a criação de um sistema comunitário de gestão das pastagens e a imposição de taxas sobre a utilização das mesmas. Esta combinação de políticas deverá garantir que a utilização das terras de pastagem se torne sustentável. Deverá também garantir a subsistência a longo prazo das famílias de pastores.
