La quantità di rifiuti solidi urbani (RSU) generati nei paesi in via di sviluppo è in aumento a causa del rapido sviluppo urbano. I RSU sono un tipo comune di biomassa in Nigeria. Possono essere utilizzati come fonte di energia affidabile e rinnovabile per la Nigeria grazie alla loro disponibilità. La frazione organica dei RSU può essere trattata utilizzando una tecnica di gestione sostenibile dei rifiuti che può avere un impatto positivo in Nigeria, come la digestione anaerobica. La digestione anaerobica dei rifiuti alimentari può essere considerata una delle più promettenti risorse energetiche rinnovabili e tecniche di gestione dei rifiuti per le generazioni presenti e future. Per questo motivo è stato condotto uno studio di fattibilità sulla digestione anaerobica di un tipico rifiuto alimentare nigeriano codigestato con carta, rifiuti verdi, giacinto d’acqua e Jatropha in condizioni mesofile. Port Harcourt, la capitale dello stato di Rivers situata nella regione del Delta del Niger, è stata utilizzata come area di studio. Questo studio ha confermato che i rifiuti alimentari nigeriani codigestati con diversi substrati possono essere trattati con digestione anaerobica.
