A quantidade de resíduos sólidos urbanos (RSU) gerados nos países em desenvolvimento está a aumentar devido ao rápido desenvolvimento urbano. Os RSU são um tipo de biomassa comum na Nigéria. Devido à sua disponibilidade, podem ser utilizados como uma fonte de energia fiável e renovável para a Nigéria. A fração orgânica dos RSU pode ser tratada utilizando uma técnica sustentável de gestão de resíduos que pode criar um impacto positivo na Nigéria, como a digestão anaeróbia. A digestão anaeróbia de resíduos alimentares pode ser considerada como um dos recursos energéticos renováveis e técnicas de gestão de resíduos mais promissores para as gerações actuais e futuras. Por esse motivo, foi efectuado um estudo de viabilidade sobre a digestão anaeróbia de um resíduo alimentar típico da Nigéria co-digerido com papel, resíduos verdes, jacinto de água e Jatropha em condições mesófilas. Este estudo confirmou que os resíduos alimentares nigerianos co-digeridos com diferentes substratos podem ser tratados por digestão anaeróbia.
