L’accelerazione dello spostamento del paradigma scientifico-industriale globale da sistemi estrattivi, lineari e ad alta intensità chimica verso contesti basati sulle biotecnologie, circolari ed efficienti dal punto di vista delle risorse ha modificato radicalmente il valore concettuale dei sottoprodotti agricoli. In questa trasformazione più ampia, i semi di cotone - un tempo considerati un residuo secondario dell’industria cotoniera - sono sempre più riconosciuti come una materia prima strategicamente importante, grazie alla loro architettura biochimica unica e al loro potenziale multivettoriale di conversione in prodotti ad alto valore aggiunto. L’olio e la farina di semi di cotone racchiudono un’intricata interazione di lipidi, proteine, carboidrati, micronutrienti, composti enzimatici attivi e tossici fenolici - in particolare il gossipolo - inseriti in matrici strutturali complesse. I processi di lavorazione tradizionali, che privilegiano l’estrazione del petrolio grezzo e le applicazioni di mangimi di bassa qualità, hanno storicamente sottoutilizzato questa ricchezza biochimica e sono stati limitati dalla bassa efficienza di conversione, dagli oneri ambientali e dalle limitazioni della qualità del prodotto.
